AI
AI & Machine Learning
There is a lot of noise around AI right now, and a lot of solutions looking for problems. We take a different approach: we start with your actual business challenges and work backwards to figure out whether AI is the right tool and, if so, which kind. Custom models, pre-trained APIs, retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning, workflow automation: we know the landscape well enough to pick the right approach rather than the fashionable one.
The AI solutions we build are designed to be understood and managed by the people using them, not treated as black boxes. We build in monitoring, explainability where it matters, and clear handoffs for cases where a human needs to take over.
What's included
- AI strategy and use-case identification grounded in your actual data, processes and commercial goals
- Custom ML model development, from data preparation through training, evaluation and deployment
- Natural language processing for document understanding, classification, summarisation and conversational interfaces
- Computer vision solutions for quality inspection, document processing, object detection and image classification
- Predictive analytics to surface patterns in your data that inform better business decisions
- AI workflow automation to remove repetitive human effort from processes that do not need it
Key Benefits
- Meaningful time and cost savings in the specific processes where AI is actually the right fit
- Better decisions made faster, backed by patterns in your data that were previously invisible
- AI your team can understand, manage and trust rather than something they have to work around
- Customer experiences that feel more responsive and personalised without requiring more headcount
- A competitive advantage built on what your data actually tells you, not on generic models trained for everyone
FAQs
We start with the problem, not the technology. In our discovery phase, we look for tasks that are high-volume, data-heavy and relatively low on the kind of judgment that really needs a human - things like document processing, classification, or pattern recognition in large datasets. If the task requires genuine empathy, complex moral reasoning, or relies on tacit knowledge that cannot be captured in data, we will tell you that AI is not the right fit.
There is no benefit in pointing you at the wrong tool.
Pre-trained APIs like GPT-4 or Claude are powerful general-purpose tools that work well straight out of the box for many language tasks. Custom ML models are trained on your data for a specific problem - they tend to be more accurate for that specific task and give you more control over what goes in and out. The right choice depends on your use case, your data, your latency requirements and your budget. Often the answer is a combination: a foundation model with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to ground it in your proprietary data.
This is one of the first things we address. We build secure wrappers and access controls around any model that touches your data, and we are careful about which APIs and providers we use for which tasks. Most enterprise API agreements explicitly exclude customer data from training, but we verify this and document it. For highly sensitive data, we work with models that can be self-hosted or deployed within your own infrastructure so the data never leaves your environment.
AI is a fast evolving field, and you're right to be cautious of how your data can be used. Whatever the risks associated with work we're undertaking with you, we'll work with you to understand and mitigate it.
While we believe that AI is an incredible tool, the truth is, you shouldn't ever trust AI output completely. You build trust through visibility, eventually adopting a trust but verify model when it's safe to do so.
Where possible, we work with you to instrument an AI solution with monitoring that tracks output quality, accuracy and drift over time. We also build human-in-the-loop workflows for anything where an incorrect output carries real consequences — the AI does the heavy lifting, a human reviews the result before it goes anywhere important.
We design explainability into the system from the start so you can understand why a particular output was produced, not just what it was.
Wherever possible, we'll build with an abstraction layer between your application logic and the underlying model. That means switching from one model to another — say, from GPT-5 to a newer or cheaper alternative — is a configuration change, not a rebuild. The AI landscape moves fast. We will do our best to make sure you are not locked into yesterday's best option when a better one emerges.
We work on time-and-materials or fixed-scope arrangements depending on what makes sense for the engagement. For early-stage discovery and exploratory work, time-and-materials gives you the flexibility to change direction as you learn. For well-defined deliverables where the scope is clear, a fixed-price statement of work gives you budget certainty. We will recommend the model that protects your interests, not just the one that is easier for us.
Yes. While we are based in Manchester and work closely with businesses across the North West, we work with clients across the UK and further afield. Most of our work is delivered remotely, with on-site visits for the sessions where being in the room actually matters — typically discovery workshops, stakeholder interviews and key decision points.
Security is not a phase at the end of a project — it is part of how we work throughout. We hold Cyber Essentials accreditation and our team has a background in defence and high-security environments, so secure-by-default thinking is genuinely embedded in how we approach architecture, code and data handling. For clients with specific compliance requirements, we can align our delivery to ISO 27001, GDPR, JOSCAR or other relevant frameworks.
We start with a free consultation to understand your situation and work out whether we are a good fit for each other. If we move forward, the first formal phase is discovery: structured workshops and conversations to understand your goals, constraints, existing systems and the people involved. At the end of discovery you get a clear picture of what we are recommending and why. We'll provide you with enough information to make an informed decision about next steps, with no obligation to continue if it is not the right time.
That being said, we know that no two projects are the same, so we'll always work with you to work out what fits best!
